Yesterday in Dhaka, the quota reform movement turned violent as police used tear gas and live ammunition against protesters. Coordinators of the movement allege that police entered university campuses, launching tear gas, sound grenades, and firing shots, evoking memories of the March 25, 1971, incident. Movement coordinator Sarzis Alam claimed this brutal action was directed by the government. In response, a new ‘complete shutdown’ protest has been announced.
