The incident occurred in July. The discovery of nine mutilated bodies of women from a garbage dump in Nairobi shocked Kenya. The entire country was stirred by the news. The accused, 33-year-old Collins Jomaisi Khalusha, was arrested. He had been killing 42 women over the past two years using the same method.
However, the Kenyan police could not keep this dangerous killer in custody for more than a month. Khalusha, along with 13 other prisoners, escaped by cutting the barbed wire on the roof of the jail. This happened at a police station in Nairobi on Tuesday morning, where Khalusha had been held since his arrest. This information was reported by The Guardian.
Following this incident, the police administration is facing criticism. There are allegations that someone inside the police station helped Khalusha escape. Acting IGP Gilbert Masinga stated that an escape of prisoners occurred at the Gigiri police station in the morning. Thirteen prisoners, including the accused in the serial killing case, escaped. Initial investigations suggest that someone inside the station assisted their escape.
Action has already been taken against eight officers at the police station for allegedly aiding the escape. A large-scale operation is underway to capture Khalusha.
Kenyan police have previously been accused of human rights violations. The force is also under investigation for incidents of casualties during ongoing anti-government protests.
