Internationally renowned human rights lawyer Toby Cadman met with Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus today, during which the Chief Adviser emphasized that one of the government’s top priorities is to recover the billions of dollars embezzled during the 15-year authoritarian rule of Sheikh Hasina.
During the meeting, held on Monday, September 2, Cadman informed Dr. Yunus that the indiscriminate shootings by law enforcement on ordinary students and citizens during July and August amounted to outright genocide. He also highlighted that crimes against humanity were committed during the revolution. Cadman suggested the establishment of a domestic tribunal to bring those responsible for these killings to justice.
Cadman further stressed the need for Bangladesh to swiftly establish an effective internal legal framework for truth, justice, and accountability—one that would garner international support and be accepted by the people of Bangladesh.
In presenting several proposals to the Chief Adviser, Cadman stated that they are ready to support Bangladesh in creating a framework for extraditing individuals involved in crimes against humanity, economic crimes, and political corruption. He also offered assistance in repatriating those who have fled the country with ill-gotten wealth.
The Chief Adviser listened to Cadman’s proposals and requested that they be submitted in writing. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring internationally acceptable justice for those who ordered and executed the genocide during the student-led revolution.
