The United States has imposed sanctions on several Chinese research institutions, accusing them of assisting Pakistan in the development of ballistic missiles. The move was reported on Thursday, September 12, by Reuters.
According to the report, the U.S. State Department announced the sanctions on Thursday, citing concerns over collaboration between Chinese entities and Pakistan in missile development. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller stated in a press release that the Beijing Research Institute of Automation for Machine Building Industry has been working with Pakistan to test rocket motors for the Shaheen-3 and Ababeel missile systems and has also assisted in acquiring equipment for potentially larger systems.
This is not the first time the U.S. has taken action against Chinese companies over missile development assistance. In October 2023, Washington imposed sanctions on three Chinese companies for allegedly supplying Pakistan with missile-related equipment.
In response to the latest sanctions, Chinese Embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu in Washington said, “China firmly opposes unilateral U.S. sanctions and interference in areas beyond its jurisdiction.”
