Dhaka, September 9, 2024: The law that provided special security to the family members of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been abolished. Today, Monday, the President issued the ‘Father of the Nation’s Family Members’ Security (Abolition) Ordinance, 2024′, which repeals the ‘Father of the Nation’s Family Members’ Security Act, 2009′.
The draft of this ordinance received final approval in an advisory council meeting held on August 29. During the meeting, it was mentioned that the law enacted in 2009 under the previous government provided special state security and benefits to a specific family, which was discriminatory. On May 15, 2015, a notification was issued under this law to grant special security to the family members.
In the meeting, it was also noted that after the recent anti-discrimination student and public uprising, the current interim government has pledged to eliminate all forms of discrimination. Since there is no parliament at present, it was deemed necessary to issue an ordinance to quickly abolish this law. Following vetting by the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, the advisory council gave its final approval to the draft of the ‘Father of the Nation’s Family Members’ Security (Abolition) Ordinance, 2024′.
With the issuance of this ordinance, the previous law on special security and state privileges has been annulled, marking a new chapter in the country’s legal process.
