Dhaka, Bangladesh – Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruq Ahmed has suggested that star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has a strong possibility of retiring from international cricket in his home country. Speaking to the media on Monday, October 7, Ahmed shared that Shakib had expressed his desire to play his final Test match for Bangladesh, though uncertainties still loom over his return to the country.
Before the Kanpur Test, Shakib had announced his intention to retire after the Test series against South Africa in Mirpur. However, doubts arose about whether Shakib would be able to return to Bangladesh due to ongoing legal concerns.
Faruq Ahmed, speaking about Shakib’s situation, said, “I have communicated with Shakib, and there is a strong possibility that he will retire in Bangladesh.”
When asked about the legal complexities surrounding Shakib’s return, the BCB president explained, “I cannot speak about the legal side. As the BCB President, my authority is limited. The matter must be handled by the government. Law enforcement agencies and government advisers will decide on the overall responsibility.”
Ahmed also assured that BCB has the capacity to manage Shakib’s participation within the cricketing facilities. “As far as our responsibilities go, we can ensure that he trains indoors, plays at the stadium, and continues his practice sessions. This much we can manage,” he added.
The cricketer has been involved in a murder case, raising concerns over his potential arrest upon returning to Bangladesh. With several members of the ruling Awami League already arrested, there is speculation that Shakib could face similar consequences. Shakib, meanwhile, has made it clear that he wants to avoid any legal troubles, both during his return to Bangladesh and when leaving the country.
The situation continues to develop, with cricket fans awaiting further clarification regarding Shakib’s future in the sport and his legal challenges.
