New York, September 24, 2024: Dr. Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the anti-discrimination student movement, introduced Mahfuz Abdullah, also known as Mahfuz Alam, as the ‘mastermind’ behind the movement during the Clinton Global Initiative Leaders Stage event. The event, hosted by former U.S. President Bill Clinton, took place on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly.
Dr. Yunus, a Nobel Laureate, highlighted Mahfuz’s role in orchestrating key decisions for the movement, calling him the architect behind its success. While introducing him on stage, Yunus said, “Mahfuz is the mastermind behind the mass uprising. Though he always says it’s a collective effort, his leadership and strategic thinking are unparalleled. His words can inspire any young person around the world.”
Mahfuz serves as a coordinator of the Liaison Committee of the anti-discrimination student movement, which has gained widespread attention in recent months. The movement aims to address systemic inequalities and push for reforms in Bangladesh.
A Call for Global Support
Dr. Yunus further emphasized the importance of supporting the youth involved in the movement. “They are ready to build a new world and a new Bangladesh. Please help them achieve their dreams,” he said, addressing global leaders. Turning to Bill Clinton, he added, “You are with us in realizing this dream.”
Also present on stage were Dr. Yunus’ two assistant press secretaries, Suchismita Tithi and Naim Ali, who accompanied him during the session. Dr. Yunus praised the resilience and determination of the movement’s leaders, describing them as future builders of Bangladesh.
Mahfuz’s Role in Focus
Though Mahfuz is known for working behind the scenes, this public acknowledgment by Dr. Yunus has put him in the spotlight on the international stage. Mahfuz has been instrumental in shaping the strategy and direction of the movement, making critical decisions that have fueled its progress.
The General Assembly session concludes on September 27, after which Dr. Yunus is expected to return to Dhaka with his team.
