A Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate court has granted an 8-day remand for former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Abdullah Al Mamun in connection with the murder case of grocery store owner Abu Sayeed in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. The court issued the order on Wednesday morning.
Earlier on Wednesday at 6:45 AM, Abdullah Al Mamun was brought to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court. The police requested a 10-day remand for further investigation of the case. After the hearing, the court approved an 8-day remand.
Abdullah Al Mamun was arrested on Tuesday night, September 3. The Dhaka Metropolitan Police reported that he expressed his desire to surrender while in military custody due to the charges against him. Subsequently, the police took him into custody on Tuesday night. Multiple cases have already been filed against him.
Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun served as the 31st Inspector General of Bangladesh Police. He was appointed as the IGP on September 30, 2022. The government later extended his tenure twice on a contractual basis. His contractual appointment was revoked on August 5, two days after the resignation of Sheikh Hasina. Since August 5, he had been under military custody.
Before his tenure as IGP, Abdullah Al Mamun served as the Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and as the Chief of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Bangladesh Police.
