Narsingdi, September 25, 2024: A Narsingdi court has denied the remand plea for former Industry Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, 78, and ordered his immediate transfer to jail. The decision was made on Wednesday afternoon by Senior Judicial Magistrate Rakibul Islam.
Earlier in the day, Humayun, also a former Member of Parliament for the Narsingdi-4 (Monohardi-Belabo) constituency, was presented in court at around 12 PM. The plaintiff’s side had filed for a 5-day remand, which was subsequently rejected by the court.
The case stems from the murder of Jahangir Alam, Vice President of the Workers’ Party in the 7th Ward of Mahishashura Union, Narsingdi Sadar Upazila. The murder, which took place amid ongoing student and public protests, led to the filing of a case on September 9 at the Narsingdi Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, with Sheikh Hasina, the former Prime Minister, being listed as the main accused. Humayun was implicated as one of the co-accused.
Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun was arrested in the early hours of September 24 from the Gulshan area in Dhaka by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). He was subsequently brought before the Assistant Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Narsingdi, where the police requested a 5-day remand. However, the court rejected the remand request and permitted jail-gate interrogation instead.
