A Dhaka court has granted a five-day remand for Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed, a former Member of Parliament and former Vice President (VP) of Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU). He was remanded in connection with a murder case filed at Paltan Police Station in the capital. The court issued the remand order on Monday, September 30.
Earlier, Sultan Mansur was detained by the Detective Branch (DB) of police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport. DB officials stated that there are specific allegations against him, and he was taken into custody for interrogation regarding those accusations.
Sultan Mohammad Mansur Ahmed first gained prominence in the 1980s as a leader of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL). He holds the unique distinction of being the only BCL president to serve as the VP of Dhaka University’s student body, DUCSU. Although he was originally affiliated with the ruling Awami League, Sultan Mansur is now an active leader of the political alliance Jatiya Oikya Front.
In the 2018 11th National Parliamentary Election, Sultan Mansur contested from the Moulvibazar-2 constituency under the symbol of the paddy sheaf, representing Jatiya Oikya Front. He was elected as a Member of Parliament in that election.
The investigation surrounding his alleged involvement in the murder case is still ongoing
