Chelsea 0-2 Manchester City
Erling Haaland, who joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in the 2022-23 season, marked his 100th appearance for the club with a goal as City defeated Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. This match also kicked off the 2024-25 season for the reigning champions.
Haaland scored his 91st goal for Manchester City in the 18th minute. The goal came from a well-placed pass by Jeremy Doku on the left flank. Bernardo Silva’s pass deflected off Haaland’s foot, allowing him to outmaneuver Chelsea defenders Levi Colwill and Marc Cucurella and slot the ball past goalkeeper Robert Sánchez. Initially, there was a delay in celebrating the goal while VAR reviewed whether Silva was offside, but the goal was ultimately confirmed.
Chelsea had a goal disallowed in the first half when Cole Palmer’s powerful shot was saved by Ederson and subsequently put in by Nicolas Jackson. However, the goal was ruled out for offside. A potential second goal for City by Nico Lewis in the 65th minute was also canceled due to a foul by Haaland, who received a yellow card for the infraction.
The match was finally secured for Manchester City in the 84th minute when Mateo Kovacic scored a brilliant goal from 25 yards against his former club, ensuring a decisive 2-0 victory for City.
