In response to the recent deterioration of law and order in the capital’s Mohammadpur area, joint forces, led by the army, conducted an operation resulting in the arrest of 45 individuals. Major Nazim shared this update during a press briefing at Basila Camp on Saturday night (October 26).
Of those arrested, three were apprehended for direct involvement in muggings, two for store robberies, and 40 others as suspected muggers. Major Nazim announced that temporary camps will be set up across various housing areas in Mohammadpur to improve security and provide peace of mind to local residents. He expressed hope that the increased security measures will curb incidents of muggings, extortion, and crime.
Since the army was granted magistracy powers in this area, a total of 197 people have been detained from Mohammadpur. The authorities have seized 18 firearms, 261 rounds of ammunition, 19 types of narcotics, a grenade, and an assortment of approximately 75-80 locally made weapons. These items have been handed over to Mohammadpur, Adabor, and Sher-e-Bangla police stations.
Using CCTV and video footage, the joint forces identified and detained the suspects. Major Nazim revealed that two or three of the detainees might be involved in drug trafficking. Several members of teenage gangs, identified by distinctive tattoos, are suspected of organizing thefts in the area. The gangs would typically operate in the early morning when the streets were less crowded or in the late afternoon when people returned from work.
