In a remarkable incident last night in the Baidyerbazar area of Kurigram district, the issue of security for minority Hindus has taken on a new dimension. Devout Muslims, acting on their own initiative, successfully thwarted an attack by a group of extremist Hindus while protecting a temple. They managed to apprehend 10 attackers on the spot.
These 10 attackers were all members of the Hindu community. Upon interrogation, the extremists admitted that their main plan involved a further 68 Hindus, led by a Hindu youth named Sujit Chandra. This group has been using various social media platforms to coordinate their activities. Their primary goal was to set fire to Hindu homes and temples and blame BNP and Jamaat for the attacks. The revelation of this plot has sparked frustration and anger among local Muslims.
The devout Muslims of Baidyerbazar stated, “Since the first attacks on Hindu homes and temples began, we have organized teams to protect them, ensuring that no organized group can attack them. However, we are now embarrassed that those we are protecting are themselves planning to set fire to their own religious places. We demand strict punishment for those involved.”
It is noteworthy that recent incidents of attacks on Hindu homes and temples in Bangladesh have raised concerns. However, the exposure of the involvement of extremist Hindus in these attacks has brought the situation to a new level. The local administration and security forces are investigating the incident and have assured that legal action will be taken against the arrestees.
