BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Demands Investigation of Human Rights Violations by UN Committee
Dhaka, August 30, 2024 – BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has criticized the Awami League government for not signing the convention against enforced disappearances, a move that had been taken by the interim government. He demanded that all crimes against humanity committed over the past 15 years be investigated and that those responsible be brought to justice.
Mirza Fakhrul made these remarks on Friday afternoon during a memorial meeting held at Naya Paltan, Dhaka, to mark the International Day of the Victims of Enforced Disappearances. He called for an investigation into the incidents of enforced disappearances and killings in Bangladesh by a United Nations committee currently in the country.
Addressing the gathering, Mirza Fakhrul mentioned that the current government has formed a commission on enforced disappearances, which he described as a hopeful sign. He urged the state to provide support to the affected families and called on everyone to assist an interim government in ensuring fair elections.
Other leaders present at the event emphasized that the day a parliament is formed through free and fair elections will be the day of ultimate victory. They also stressed the importance of strengthening the current government’s efforts.
