Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Joe Biden held a phone conversation on Monday, August 26, where they discussed a range of issues, including the current situation in Bangladesh. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the discussion through a press release, stating that the leaders covered bilateral relations as well as regional and global matters in detail.
The conversation reportedly emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order in Bangladesh and ensuring the safety and security of minorities, particularly Hindus, in the country. Both leaders expressed concern over the recent developments in Bangladesh and the need for a quick return to normalcy.
Prime Minister Modi confirmed the phone conversation with President Biden on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating, “Today, I had a phone conversation with U.S. President Biden. We exchanged views on various regional and global issues, including the situation in Ukraine.”
In his post, Modi also mentioned the discussion on Bangladesh, stressing the urgency of restoring stability in the country and ensuring the safety of minorities, particularly Hindus.
This discussion comes in the wake of significant political turmoil in Bangladesh, where a mass uprising on August 5 led to the fall of the Awami League government, headed by Sheikh Hasina. Since then, Sheikh Hasina has been residing in India.
