Manchester City and Spain’s defensive midfielder Rodri has claimed the 2024 Ballon d’Or, outshining finalists like Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham. The announcement was made by former AC Milan star and 1995 Ballon d’Or winner George Weah at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris late Monday, October 28.
Rodri’s triumph marks the first time in 64 years that a Spanish player has won the Ballon d’Or, following Luis Suárez’s 1960 win. This makes Rodri only the second Spanish player in history to receive this prestigious award. He accepted the honor on crutches, displaying visible emotion as he received the trophy after a stellar season that saw him excel for both club and country.
Last season, Rodri led Spain to victory in the European Championship, where he was named Player of the Tournament. For Manchester City, he was instrumental in their league title, Super Cup, and Club World Cup wins, contributing to a near-perfect season with only one defeat across all matches for club and country. Vinicius Junior came in second place for the Ballon d’Or, with Jude Bellingham in third.
Speaking in Spanish, Rodri expressed, “This is an incredibly special day for me, my family, and my country.” Later, in English, he shared insights into his mindset, stating, “Every day, I strive to improve, to raise the level of my play. I aim to do a bit more than the traditional holding midfielder’s role.”
Rodri described himself as a “simple person” outside the pitch, aiming to set an example for younger players. “You don’t have to be reckless to succeed. Give your best, stay humble,” he advised.
Regarding his injury, Rodri assured fans that he is feeling better and plans to spend quality time with his family before returning to the field stronger than ever.
With his win, Rodri has given Spanish and Manchester City fans a reason to celebrate. He is the first defensive player to win the Ballon d’Or since Fabio Cannavaro in 2006 and also becomes the first Manchester City player and seventh English league player to win the honor.
