A lawsuit has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina over alleged threats to drown BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and the current government’s chief advisor, Dr. Yunus, in the Padma River. The case was filed on Sunday afternoon (September 15) in the Chittagong Metropolitan Court.
Sourav Pal, a former vice president of Chhatra Dal in Chittagong, submitted the case before Judge Jewel Deb of the Chittagong Metropolitan Court.
The plaintiff’s lawyer informed that the court has taken the case into consideration and ordered the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct an investigation. The plaintiff expressed hope for justice through this legal process.
The case stems from remarks made by Sheikh Hasina during a speech on May 18, 2022, when she criticized BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia. Hasina referenced Zia’s previous comments about the Padma Bridge, where Zia had claimed that the bridge was poorly constructed and unsafe. Sheikh Hasina remarked, “What should be done to them? They should be taken to the Padma Bridge and tossed into the river.”
Sheikh Hasina also targeted Dr. Yunus in her speech, accusing him of blocking funds for the Padma Bridge project due to his desire to hold onto his MD position. She added, “He should also be given two dips in the Padma River and then taken out so he doesn’t die. Maybe then they will learn a lesson.”
