Six unidentified bodies have been found burnt beyond recognition in the house of Sumon Khan, the Joint Secretary of Lalmonirhat District Awami League. The house is located on Thana Road, near the Central Shaheed Minar. The bodies were discovered by a fire service team around 3:30 am last night, in a room on the fourth floor. Due to the severe burns, identification of the bodies has not been possible.
Earlier, on the afternoon of Monday, August 5, miscreants set fire to the house. At that time, neither the Awami League leader nor his family members were at home.
In a related incident, six students who participated in an anti-discrimination protest at Mission Mor in Lalmonirhat city on Monday have been reported missing since the afternoon. Following the protest, several thousand participants marched from Mission Mor. According to witnesses, as the procession passed by the Shaheed Minar area on Thana Road, some miscreants set the house on fire.
The families of the missing students, with the help of army personnel, visited the house that night and discovered the bodies. They believe that the bodies might belong to their missing children.
Shahidur Rahman, the acting station officer of the Lalmonirhat Fire Service, stated, “We managed to control the fire after being alerted. Later, we recovered six bodies from the scene.”
