Ottawa, September 5, 2024: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has lost the support of the New Democratic Party (NDP), raising the likelihood of an early federal election. NDP leaders revealed this on Thursday (September 5), as reported by the BBC.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh spoke out after his party withdrew its support from Trudeau’s centrist Liberal government on Wednesday. Singh stated that Trudeau would need to form a new alliance to remain in office. The next general election is currently scheduled for October 2025.
Recent public opinion polls suggest that the center-right Conservative Party, the official opposition, could win the upcoming election by a large margin. Voter dissatisfaction with Trudeau has grown, driven by rising living costs and a housing crisis, which have eroded his popularity since he first took office in 2015.
Additionally, on Thursday, Trudeau’s close ally Jerome Broadhurst announced he would step down from the Liberal Party’s election campaign. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Broadhurst expressed a desire to spend more time with his family. The Toronto Star reported that Broadhurst believes Trudeau has little chance of winning the next election.
