Following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina amid widespread student protests, political instability has caused uncertainty in Bangladesh’s cricket scene. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) faces potential disruptions due to the political upheaval, and the future of its activities remains unclear.
Recent violence has led to delays in the Bangladesh ‘A’ team’s tour to Pakistan, originally scheduled for August 6. The team is now expected to depart on August 9. Practice sessions have resumed at Mirpur Sher-e-Bangla Stadium under coach Mizanur Rahman, with players observing a moment of silence for victims of recent violence.
BCB officials, including former captains Minhajul Abedin Nannu and Habibul Bashar Suman, emphasize the need for collective effort to keep cricket operations running smoothly. Concerns about the BCB’s leadership and potential changes are being discussed, but altering the board’s elected committee is complex and regulated by international cricket bodies.
The ICC is also considering alternative arrangements for the Women’s T20 World Cup, scheduled for October in Bangladesh, due to the ongoing crisis.
Regarding Shakib Al Hasan, who lost his parliamentary seat following the government change, BCB official Shahriar Nafis mentioned that Shakib’s return will depend on his selection for the team and personal travel preferences.
