Amidst a popular uprising, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned from her position. Subsequently, a change of power has occurred in the country, and the parliament has been dissolved by presidential order, resulting in the loss of parliamentary seats for many, including Shakib Al Hasan. There is now speculation about whether the former captain of the Tigers will return to the country.
Since the Awami League relinquished power, there have been attacks on the homes of parliament members, and their safety is at risk. Many are fleeing the country. Currently, Shakib is playing in the Global T20 League in Canada and has an upcoming tour to Pakistan. When will he return?
On Wednesday (August 7), Shahriar Nafis, head of the Cricket Operations Department of the BCB, addressed the media regarding Shakib’s situation. He stated that Shakib Al Hasan has an No Objection Certificate (NOC) until August 12. Shakib is expected to return or report to the BCB by August 13. However, there is still time, and discussions will be held to determine his plans.
Regarding the safety of Shakib and other parliament members who have either left the country or are planning to do so, Shahriar Nafis commented that safety is a concern for everyone, not just Shakib. He noted that Shakib is now no longer a parliament member due to the presidential order. Since Shakib’s NOC is valid until August 12, he is expected to return after that. The selectors have yet to announce the squad for the Pakistan series, and Shakib’s situation will be clarified once the squad is announced.
There is considerable concern about whether Shakib will return to the country. As Shakib was associated with the Awami League, the resignation of the government has put him in a difficult position. Given the current state of affairs, where other members are considering leaving the country, it is natural to have concerns about Shakib’s return.
On August 6, the Bangladesh ‘A’ team was scheduled to travel to Pakistan, but due to the situation in the country, the cricketers could not travel. The BCB is trying to arrange tickets for August 9.
