Katie Ledecky Sets Record with Ninth Olympic Gold in Women’s 800m Freestyle
Katie Ledecky has reaffirmed her position as the greatest in the history of the women’s 800-meter freestyle. The American swimmer won gold in this event at her fourth consecutive Olympic Games, cementing her legacy. By defeating Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, Ledecky earned her ninth Olympic gold medal, equaling the record held by legendary gymnast Larisa Latynina for the most gold medals won by a female athlete. Latynina, representing the former Soviet Union, secured nine golds in gymnastics from 1956 to 1964.
Ledecky completed the 800m freestyle in 8 minutes 11.04 seconds, finishing 1.25 seconds ahead of Titmus. The bronze medal went to Paige Madden from the USA.
