Russia reacted with outrage Thursday after the United States sanctioned its two largest oil companies, the first economic punishments slapped on Moscow by President Donald Trump during his second term.Experts said it remains to be seen, however, the extent to which this move may damage the Russian economy or Vladimir Putin’s war machine as Trump hopes to pressure Moscow to halt its assault on Ukraine. Days after canceling a planned summit with Putin, citing a lack of progress in the negotiations, Trump took the major step by effectively blacklisting Rosneft and Lukoil. The announcement was welcomed by Kyiv and its European…

Jess Phillips has full confidence of PM, says minister, after grooming gang survivors say inquiry will fail if she staysGood morning. Kemi Badenoch is entitled to take a bit of the credit for persuading Keir Starmer to change his mind and agree to a national grooming gangs inquiry. (GB News and Elon Musk probably played a rule too – although Starmer says the voice that mattered was Louise Casey’s.) When opposition parties influence policy, they always look a bit more serious. But – intentionally or not – by getting the inquiry off the ground, Badenoch has also plunged the government…

HONG KONG — As the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown narrows paths to entry for foreign science and technology workers, China is opening its doors wider — and drawing backlash from the public. The new “K visa,” which launched on Oct. 1, aims to make it easier for the world’s top young talents in science and technology to live and work longer in China as it vies with the U.S. for global dominance in science and technology. The new category requires no job offer, with the only requirements being an as-yet-unspecified age cap and having at least a bachelor’s degree in…

This budget could make or break Labour. Yet Rachel Reeves is dangerously constrained | Larry Elliott
The budget is still a month away and speculation about its contents is already in full swing. Details of what Rachel Reeves has planned will dribble out over the coming weeks, but two things are certain: taxes are going up, and they are going up by a significant amount.Obviously, the chancellor would prefer not to be in this position. The government has had a rotten year and this is reflected in its dire opinion poll ratings. The budget is unlikely to make Labour more popular, with a strong risk that tax increases will slow the economy, as they did last…
