Ed Miliband announced on Wednesday that Labour was speeding up plans to bring in a “total ban” on fracking. But how will this work and could it stop a future Reform government from fracking? What has the energy secretary announced?Miliband has announced that a law to ban fracking, a key promise in Labour’s 2024 manifesto, will be brought forward this autumn. Fracking – short for hydraulic fracturing – is a means of extracting gas or oil trapped in rocks deep underground. PESHAWAR, Pakistan — The Taliban has denied imposing a nationwide internet ban, claiming instead that the blackout consuming Afghanistan was due to old fiber optic cables that were now being replaced. Wednesday’s announcement was the Taliban’s first public statement since a communications blackout hit the country of over 40 million people, disrupting everything from banking to travel and businesses to aid work. The Taliban’s Urdu language website Al-Emarah quoted spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid as saying that some people were spreading rumors about a ban on internet access in the country, which he said were not true. However, one senior Taliban leader in…
Miliband vows to ban frackingThis is what Ed Miliband, the energy secretary, told the Labour conference in his speech about his decision to impose a total ban on fracking. (See 9.19am.) Fracking will not take a penny off bills. It will not create long-term sustainable jobs. It will trash our climate commitments. And it is dangerous and deeply harmful to our natural environment. The good news is that communities have fought back and won this fight before and will do so again. Remember Liz Truss and her 42 days of disaster. The Tories tried to overturn the fracking ban –…

President Donald Trump’s peace plan was met with cautious optimism Tuesday by leaders across the Middle East and the world, but others were more skeptical about the proposal — and whether it would be welcomed by Hamas. The plan was unveiled by Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after talks that appeared to exclude Hamas, with the militant group saying “not a single Palestinian” had seen the plan before it was announced.Trump said Tuesday that Hamas had “three or four days” to respond to the plan, adding that there would be “not much” room for negotiation. If Hamas were…
For Keir Starmer, this year’s Labour conference was a chance not just to address the party faithful but to see if there were any faithful left. With terrible approval ratings, and Reform UK in the ascendant, it was hard to see who his supporters might be, while Manchester’s mayor, Andy Burnham, seemed to be getting ready to challenge him as leader. On the left of the party there were calls not just for another ‘reset’ but for a wholesale change of direction. Helen Pidd spoke to delegates and MPs who told her that, even if they liked the prime minister, they…
